What is human-in-the-loop AI?
Human-in-the-loop AI means a person reviews, can meaningfully change, and owns the result before it takes effect — the tool does the legwork, but a human makes and is accountable for the decision.
Human-in-the-loop describes an AI setup where a person stays in control of the outcome. The tool produces a draft or a first pass; a person reviews it, adjusts it, and signs off; nothing takes effect until they do. Responsibility for the result sits with the human, not the software.
It's a phrase that's easy to fake. Real oversight requires three things: the person can see what the tool did and why, they can meaningfully change it (not just accept or reject), and they own the outcome. If approval is just a rubber stamp on output nobody can realistically review, the loop exists on paper only.
It also doesn't have to cost you the time you saved — reviewing a good draft is far faster than producing one from scratch. The point is to keep the judgment human while handing off the routine work around it.
